Job Description

We help vulnerable adults and their familes – that is older people, those with physical or learning disabilities, challenges with their mental health and many other ailments – to live full and independent lives in the safety and comfort of their own homes. The support we typically provide involves help with the morning/evening routine, including personal care, assistance with medication, help at meal times, including cooking and shopping for groceries, light domestic support and accompaniment on trips outside the home.

Our aim is not to meet people’s minimum basic needs as cheaply as possible (as is sadly the Social Services approach) but to improve their quality of life. The vast majority of our customers are private paying, and our Care plans aim to include sufficient time for our Care Assistants to firstly do a proper job, but also to talk and to connect with their customers while they do it. We don’t attempt to cram everything into 30min visits with no travel time between each.

Previous experience in Care can be advantageous but is not essential as we provide:

• a comprehensive 5-day induction (fully paid in Sevenoaks)
• pre-work shadowing with an experienced Mentor
• mandatory enrolment on the Care Certificate for anyone new to Care (again paid)
• annual paid refresher training in all the mandatory subjects, including practicals (e.g. moving & handling)
• additional fully-funded external training courses – e.g. Advanced Dementia Care, End of Life
• fully-funded NVQ & QCF awards in Health & Social Care

Attitude, a willingness to learn and a genuine concern for the welfare of others is what we’re looking for over experience and formal qualifications – although bringing up kids, caring for a relative or doing some shopping for an elderly neighbour is all relevant experience which often goes overlooked.

Benefits, in addition to the above, include (Sevenoaks only, our Bromley and Lewisham offices have slightly different arrangements, and obviously I can’t speak for other Franchises):

• Competitive rates of pay: £10.35 Mon-Fri, £11.70 Sat-Sun post-probation
• Tax-free mileage between customers at £0.40/mile
• Flexible working hours, full & part-time, to suit their lifestyle or fit around other work/family/social commitments
• Paid training (£100 once completed induction, £100 once passed probation)
• £120 for completing the Care Certificate
• Paid DBS – chargeable if they leave within 6 months
• £300 refer-a-friend bonus for every successful referral
• Further education and training opportunities as above
• Pension and subsidised Healthcare Plan (opt-in at a reduced rate)

Our terms of employment are as follows:

• Must live local to Sevenoaks, or within a few miles
• Have to have a full UK driving licence and car they can use for work – in Sevenoaks and Bromley, less of an issue in Lewisham & Southwark
• Need Business Class 1 insurance
• Ideally a clean DBS – though we judge previous offences/convictions on a case-by-case basis
• It’s a zero-hours contract though everyone has a regular roster; we don’t expect them to be sitting by the phone waiting for a call. It may take us a few weeks to build them a solid round, but once it’s at the level they need, it’s usually relatively stable save for hospitalisations, Care home transfers, etc, and we have usually have a long list of customers waiting to start or increase so we can usually replace any hours lost pretty quickly
• Busiest times are Mon-Fri 07:00-11:00, 17:00-22:00 and Sat-Sun all hours. The more availability they can give us between these hours the more work we will be able to give them. We’re limited as to what we can offer them if all they can give us is between school hours, Mon-Fri 09:00-15:00.

We have 3 types of Care Assistant – Day carers, Night carers & Live-in. There are 2 types of night visit – Sleep-ins, whereby the carer is on-call but expected to be asleep and can usually work the following day, and Waking Nights, whereby the carer is expected to be tending to their customer all night and which are paid at a higher rate. Live-in Care involves living with your customer in a spare bedroom on a semi-permanent basis, usually for 2-8 week periods on rotation.
